Aborigine

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Aborigine can refer to any indigenous natives, like Native Americans, but usually refers to the natives of Australia. About 400 Aboriginal groups are recognized in Australia with a population of about half a million, representing scores of indigenous languages and even some tribal religions as well. Colonial settlement of Australia resulted in forced assimilation of natives and deaths from disease, and later years saw wrangling over aboriginal rights and property seizures from the colonial era.
