Who is he?:
The president-elect of Honduras, having won the Nov. 29, 2009, election in the wake of the political crisis stirred by the June 2009 ouster of President Manuel Zelaya.
Birthdate:
Dec. 22, 1946, in Trujillo, Honduras, a northern coastal city where Christopher Columbus landed in 1502. His late father also served as a deputy in the Congress, and his brother is currently one. He has a degree in businesses administration from the University of Miami.
Personal life:
Lobo has been married three times -- present wife is Rosa -- and has 11 children. He also practices tae kwon do. His nickname is "Pepe."
Political affiliation:
The conservative leader is president of the National Party of Honduras, the main opposition center-right party to Zelaya's Liberal Party of Honduras.
Career:
A farmer, rancher and landowner who had served in the Honduran National Congress since 1990, including president of the Congress from 2002-2006. Lobo narrowly lost the 2005 presidential election to Zelaya. He has also taught college-level political economics and English.
Future:
Lobo promised that he would attempt to bring unity to Honduras after the months-long political crisis that saw Zelaya ousted and international condemnation heaped upon Honduras and its interim government. But he faces many stumbling blocks to moving the country forward, including the resistance of Latin American giant Brazil to recognize any election that took place after the Zelaya ouster (even though elections had already been scheduled prior to Zelaya being removed from office, and Zelaya would have been term-limited anyway). Lobo has promised, though, that he can get back into Brazil's good graces.
Quote:
"We are prepared to approach them and ask them to understand that there is a government which was elected, that it is the precise will of Hondurans at the ballot box, that it is a democracy and we should all respect the leadership of countries." -- Lobo after his victory, vowing to end post-Zelaya isolation from the Organization of American States and other countries
