Definition: The African National Congress is a socialist democratic party in South Africa that was founded in 1923 as an extension of an effort to give greater representation to blacks. Perhaps the most well-known member of the ANC is Nelson Mandela, who served as president when the ANC's ruling reign that lasts to this day began in 1994. Its military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, was founded in 1961. During the days of apartheid and ANC exile, the party was criticized for its violent tactics.
