The news stories of 2012 reminded me of how episodes play out in a really good HBO or Showtime series: You have an action-packed episode -- let's call that 2011, with the Arab Spring, the death of Osama bin Laden, and more -- followed by a more sedate episode -- but no less important -- that sets the vital groundwork for episodes to come.
That was 2012. Because of the headlines this year, we'll be anxiously watching Pakistan to see the influence that a young foe of the Taliban will have on women's rights vs. extremism. We'll be eyeing the White House in 2013 as President Obama launches into his second term. Will Bashar al-Assad finally fall in Syria after so much unabated bloodshed? And how will the changing dynamic in the Middle East lead to peace or war?
