Al-Arabiya reports that sources indicate Luxembourg is interested in resettling a Guantanamo inmate in the idyllic European country -- though it has to be said that in a country smaller than Rhode Island the detainee is sure to be rubbing elbows with the citizenry, much like the previous relocations of Uighurs from Guantanamo to beautiful Palau and Bermuda. More from the Arabic news network:
"A delegation from Luxembourg visited the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay on Monday with the intention of resettling at least one detainee in Luxembourg, sources told Al Arabiya. If the resettlement takes place, it will be the first time a detainee is sent to Luxembourg.
The Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington and the U.S. State Department refused to confirm or deny the visit.
The State Department said that as a general policy they do not comment on ongoing negotiations with possible host countries.
Since U.S. President Barack Obama took office, 64 detainees have been transferred from Guantanamo: 36 individuals to 25 different countries."
The majority of the remaining 176 detainees are Yemeni.
On Tuesday, the U.S. government took aim at Iranian controlled-firms in other countries in order to close any loopholes in sanctions. One of them was Metal & Mineral Trade S.a.r.L. in Luxembourg, identified by the Treasury Department as "part of Iran's foreign trade network."
