The Saudi Pick-Up Artists

Monday October 13, 2008
Check out this fascinating clip from LBC TV in Lebanon: It's a segment on how, with the strict religious rules governing all aspects of life in Saudi Arabia, young men and women find a way to work around the status quo and meet members of the opposite sex. Not surprisingly, technology helps to advance the culture of arranged marriages to the meet market: online social networking such as Facebook, Bluetooth messaging, etc. It's also interesting to hear these youth-on-the-street interviews drop English-language phrases here and there.

Also, here is a good article by a young Saudi woman that visits some of the methods employed by Saudi daters in the video, and talks about the evolving culture of marriage in the kingdom: such as, more Saudi men gravitating toward their Indonesian housekeepers.
