North Korea Destroys Nuclear Tower
Also known as Kim Jong Il trying to declare to the world in the most visible way that yes, he's done with the nuclear business. But the televised destruction of the 60-foot cooling tower at North Korea's main nuclear power plant on Friday left more questions than answers. Was it all just a big production, orchestrated by Hollywood fanatic Kim himself, that will prove to be all style and no substance? Is it just one sign in a gradual thawing of long-simmering hostilities between Kim's notoriously closed society and the West? Is it the beginning of the end of the Axis of Evil?Perhaps it's somewhere in the middle. Impoverished North Korea -- well, impoverished except for the Dear Leader and his fleet of Mercedes and Jaguars -- has been forced to take some sort of concrete action to free itself from crippling economic sanctions. But if you're blowing up the cooling tower to show that you won't produce any more plutonium, will you also choose to be forthright about what's in your nuclear stockpile? Will you dish the dirt on which regimes have been the lucky recipients of nuclear technology sharing? Will you renege on your promises once sanctions have been lifted?
