Sudan Airways Plane Bursts Into Flames
Death tolls have been rising and falling all day after the plane veered off the runway after landing and burst into flames, so I'm going with the latest report from Al-Jazeera, the news agency upon which others seem to be leaning for information:
- "The airport's chief doctor said 120 of the 217 people on board were killed.
But police deputy director-general Al Adel Ajeb told Sudan Television that there were 111 survivors.
'The operation to recover bodies from the plane is going on now. It is a difficult operation because some bodies are completely burnt and there are body parts,' he said.
A police official said that emergency services had rushed to the scene and managed to put out the blaze.
Al Jazeera's Imran Garda, reporting from Khartoum, said there were many conflicting reports on what exactly happened.
Police chief General Mohammad Najib said bad weather had 'caused the plane to crash land, split into two and catch fire'.
At the time of the landing a sand storm in the Sudanese capital was restricting visibility, residents said.
But Yusuf Ibrahim, the director of Khartoum airport, said the jet landed safely and was about to park when an explosion happened on board."
A Sudan Airways jet last caught fire nearly five years ago while trying to land, killing 115 people.
