First Storm of the Season Hits Yucatan

Saturday May 31, 2008
And what's the name of the hurricane season's firstborn? Arthur.

Originally forming near Belize and weakening while passing over the Yucatan peninsula, Arthur could gain strength if it pops up again in the Gulf of Mexico. More from CNN:

"The government of Belize issued a tropical storm warning for the nation's coast, and the government of Mexico issued a tropical storm warning from Cabo Catoche south to the border with Belize.

...The storm was forecast to dump up to 10 inches of rain over Belize, up to 15 inches in isolated areas, the hurricane center said.

The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season begins Sunday."

Over in the Pacific, meanwhile, the first tropical storm of the season, Alma, debuted and then quickly exited stage left.

Track the storms of the season over at the National Hurricane Center.
